THE TEN DOCTORS AUDIENCE FEEDBACK (Taken from E-mails, Internet Forums, Live Journals and Blogs, with grateful thanks to those people that posted it all!) “Truly a highlight of the con, for me! “Favourite bits: * Anytime David stepped on stage as The Master! * The rather pathetic Adric! * Colin's sublime cameo! * The many exquisite impersonations * The Rasta Warrior Robot * etc., etc. Not-so-favourite bit: * That wretched fire alarm!!! Well done, gang! Bravo!” “Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Thank you so much guys. Please come back again (every year)!” “I adored the play. I thought it was hilarious. The 9th Doctor was SO perfect, and so was Ten. Alternate Universe Rose was great. Just an incredible night, by a very talented bunch of people. Thank you for coming to Gallifrey!!” “You know we all were enjoying it if our brains registered the fire alarm but our bodies wouldn't leave the chairs!” “A marvellous troupe called the Offstage Theatre Group performed a play called "The Ten Doctors," and it was one of those live experiences that had that magical quality. It was such a great feeling to be in a roomful of hundreds of people who were laughing at stuff like: "Have you ever wondered what's it like to be wanderers in the fourth dimension? Have you? To be exiles?” (pause) "Um... no, not really." “My
Favourites: “The actor's impression of the Seventh Doctor was spot-on, IMO. That was the highlight for me, personally. The Tenth Doctor impersonation was impressive as well, and the actress who played Zoë and some other characters was quite frankly gorgeous.” “The laughter clearly fuelled their performances! Did you see how Bob puffed out his chest even more when we all booed and hissed at him as Michael Grade???” “In a way I think I enjoyed the most all those bits of the show where the cast cleverly handled the odd moments, like forgetting a line or prop difficulties. The Brig just removing his troublesome moustache made for a perfect joke even if it was inspired by difficulty keeping it on, and whenever a line was missed, they handled it with the same humour with which they delivered the scripted jokes. They were having fun and it showed.” “The things that will stick out in your mind for a long time. Like an entire room full of Doctor Who fans not budging while the fire alarm was blaring in the second act of The Ten Doctors.” “'The Ten Doctors' was a huge highlight for me. What a great show!! Despite the fire alarm troubles.” “I only saw Part One of the ten hour, I mean, three hour play. ;0) I am sorely angry at my eyes for putting me to sleep during it even though I liked the show, and not making it to Act 2. I'm getting old.....” “OFFSTAGE did a superb job - one of the most memorable events, I think, in our long history. It was hilarious, very entertaining, and the group did such a marvellous job with not only limited resources but also the sudden and startling fire alarm in the middle of Act II (playing right along with it). What an unforgettable evening.” “It was brilliant Guys (and Gals)! The 10th Doctor - awe-inspiring. A spot-on re-creation.” “Saturday night: the play ‘The Ten Doctors’ by The OFFSTAGE Theatre Group. Extremely funny. It was remarkable, there were about 600 people in the room, watching and listening to these unbelievably arcane and esoteric jokes about a fairly obscure show, and people were falling off their chairs laughing. Best bit: Michael Grade is being put on trial by the High Council of Gallifrey and when the time comes to take him away to be punished, Madam President calls “Commander Maxil!”… and Colin Baker comes out to haul him off stage. There was nearly a riot. There was also a fire alarm in the middle of the play, turned out to be a false alarm but it caused some amusing confusion.” “I really enjoyed the play. The criticisms I'll knock out of the way first which we all probably know - it was too long. Because it was twice the length advertised my friends who came with me had to leave at intermission sadly. So yes some trimming and extra pacing would have helped. And I thought some of the sexual gags could have been toned down or omitted (not all mind you, I'm not a prude but I just believe in balance that's all). But then again I know there were only 9 actors playing so many parts and by the sound of things they didn't have as much prep time and rehearsal time as they normally would like. Besides how often do you see a live Doctor Who Play/Parody? Exactly. I got the feeling some of the newer series fans were put off with all the classic material after the opening two or three scenes which is a shame but I'm glad it was all inclusive.” The
play "The Ten Doctors" on Saturday night was fantastic; it
ran a little long (it was advertised as a 90 min. event but it ran nearly
three hours), with great performances and lots of terrific jokes. My
favourite (paraphrased) was: “We went back downstairs to get in line for The Ten Doctors. We had great seats, the performance was hysterical, and the second act opened with a great Michael Grade gag. He was escorted off the stage by Cmdr. Maxil - played by Colin Baker - and the audience was ecstatic. He had a straw hat under his arm with a big flower stuck in it. Yay for Esmeralda! Just before he pushed "Michael Grade" off the stage he stroked 'Esmeralda' and the audience went mad again.” “My
highlights: “I thought the second act worked better as they could move along at a better pace and have more multiple Doctor interaction.” “The Ten Doctors was just awesome, I loved every minute of it. Even when the fire alarm went off. And Colin's cameo as Maxil was priceless.” “I was disappointed in the pace of the performance, and I feel this let the whole thing down from what would have been twice as enjoyable. Although I enjoyed the performances, the writing and the jokes, Offstage would have benefited from having someone do a George Lucas style of firm direction along the lines of "faster and more intense!", as Star Wars actors say was his repetitious directorial instruction.” “The Ten Doctors play by the Offstage Theatre Company - A fun romp through the history of Doctor Who on the screen and behind the scenes, adapting the basic plot of The Five Doctors. A bit long and slow at times, but still a good time, even with the fire alarm in the middle of the second act.” “8:00pm - The Ten Doctors. I came out to line up for this after the Torchwood episode and the line was damn near wrapped around the hallway, and was quickly filling up the second. I was extremly surprised, and very very happy that I got inside the ballroom where the play was being held. The play itself, HUGE highlight of the weekend. It was hilarious and I laughed so hard.” “It was a bit long, but had pretty much every single Dr Who joke you can think of.” “The OTG play was long, but very worth it and after talking to one of the actors during the banquet today, I have even more appreciation for them!” “Everything
was good about this play. The Rasta robot was very funny, the bad sound
effects timing, and even though the smoke alarm went off during the
first act, the play was still very enjoyable. Funny enough, I think
my favorite thing about the play was the actor who played Christopher
Eccleston. He was a f***ing perfect Ninth Doctor. I think he was the
best. The actor who played the 10th Doctor was so perfect as well. Had
David Tennant down so well. He was pretty cute too!*G* The play was
very long, but it was so worth it. Worth it, to see them make fun of
Eccleston leaving the show. I LOVED THIS!!” |
